As you would imagine, this is a useful technique for determining the browser that an end user is viewing your website with. Why would you want to do this? - Well, Redirecting a user with a certain browser to a specific page can be handy, as can gathering information on your users, so that you can develop the website further with a clear vision for compatibility. With all the weird and wonderful browsers out there and a plethora of versions to contend with, it can be a bit of a tricky exercise and there are two ways to gather the information on a browser, namely client-side or server-side detection. Most client-side browser detection will be done with JavaScript. Two good articles to read are Webmonkey's and Inside DHTML's Browser detection doesn't have to be performed client-side however, and a feature of ASP.NET is that it can identify a whole host of information about your browser. Read about ASP.NET and server side browser detection in this article, from 4guysfromrolla. Not got access to .NET? No problem, it can be done just as easily with PHP, as illustrated here.
