Steve's Packard Bell System UpgradeTransforming a Packard Bell Legend 100CDto today's reasonably decent technologyIntroduction |Taking It Apart |Putting It TogetherThis site details my adventure as I upgraded (or more accurately, reconstructed) anold Packard Bell Legend 100CD desktop computer, barely hobbling along with a 60mhzPentium chip (running Windows 95) into a modern and reasonably powered 1.1ghzPentium III chip (running Red Hat Linux) with decent hardware features andspecifications. This adventure was a labor of love - it certainly cost more to use the LPX-stylecase than to buy a new similarly equipped PC. But for the "retro" look, Idecided to keep the low profile desktop case, monitor with the goofy side-mountedspeakers, and the old funky mouse. So just for fun, I've documented my stepsto upgrade an old computer into something new and exciting.System SpecsBefore the TransformationAfter the TransformationCPUOriginal Pentium @ 60mhzPentium III @ 1.1ghzRAM72mb (8mb on the motherboardwith 2 x 32mb SIMM strips)512mb PC133 SDRAMCD DriveOld Slow 4x CD-ROM32x10x40 CD-RWHard DriveOld Slow 2gb Western Digital80gb 7200rpm MaxtorVideo1Mb Cirrus Logic 5354SiS630E 64mb AGP 4xAudioSB16 CompatiblePCI-3D SoundNetworkingOnly a slow 56k ModemRealtek 10/100 BaseT EthernetUSB PortsNoneTwo (plus two more optional)Operating SystemWindows 95Red Hat Linux 7.3 ValhallaRead on for specifics about... Taking Apart the "Old" Computer Putting Together the "New" ComputerFAQ about the Power SupplyA number of folks have written asking about the power supply for thestandard Packard Bell speakers (those cool speakers mounted on the monitor sides).Mine is a relatively small, white "Plug Pak" type power supply, approximately 1-1/2"tall by 1-1/2" wide by maybe 2-1/2" deep. It is manufactured (or at least "branded")by PB and it has the following written on it:Plug-in Class 2 Power SupplyModel No.: D480901000UInput: 120VAC 60Hz 15WOutput: 9VDC 1APBCS #: 146139The part number is 5061359305. Just for kicks, I did a quick search and foundwhat should be equivalent Plug Pak power supplies fromMontek Electronics andKen's Electronicsamong others (please note I have not purchased any of these items, and I providethese links for informational purposes only).FAQ about Manuals and CDsOther folks have written asking about the original startup disks, restore disks, recovery disks, and other software that came with the Packard Bell Legend 100CD. Idiscarded those floppy disks and CDs years ago - this machine came out when Windows95 was brand new, and I have upgraded to many subsequent operating systems over the years. While I am unable to help you with any software, you might want to check your localcomputer hobby shop-type store that sells legacy operating systems, or try an onlineauction site like eBay (you never know, someone might have some CDs kicking around). On a similar note, I recently found some (but not all) of the manuals that came with thecomputer. At this time, I am not selling or otherwise parting with them. However,if you have a specific question that might be answered in the manual, let me know and Iwill take a look and reply with whatever information (or lack thereof) I find.Packard Bell general links and references:The alt.sys.pc-clone.packardbell newsgroupPackard Bell Support WebsiteRay's Packard Bell Web SiteGeneral Packard Bell InformationPackard Bell 520r Motherboard SpecsPackard Bell Specials at PC Factory OutletPackard Bell BIOS, Flash, and Drivers information:Wim Bervoets' BIOS WebsitePackard Bell Download BIOS UpdatesPackard Bell Legacy Downloads (Official Site)Identifying Packard Bell Systems for MFI BIOS UpgradesPackard Bell Drivers (System, Video, Audio, etc.)LPX Form Factor sites and products:AxiomTek Socket 370 High Performance LPX SBCEMB-9160 Intel FC-370 Pentium III/Celeron LPX Main BoardAmerican Predator Corporation Hunter Pentium/MMXAmerican Predator Corporation Raptor Pentium II/III LPX Industrial ControlleraCrosser AR-B1690 Socket 370 LPX BoardDCS Industries with LPX MotherboardsLPX Zone at FriendTech ComputerSpecific information about the PowerLeap Renaissance card:(Sadly, this item is no longer available for purchase.)PowerLeap Renaissance/370S Upgrade CardPowerLeap Renaissance/370S Installation Guide ...
