Classmaker is a calendar based planning tool for teachers and small project managers. It can be used by anybody who wants to plan ahead using a calendar centric view of the world. When planning how do you think? Most of us like to brainstorm first and after that out comes the calendar. Classmaker can be your calendar, lesson plan generator and diary, all rolled together into one piece of software, designed to meet the needs of teachers and others who find that their plans are constantly changing as they unfold. Why use Classmaker? Classmaker is not assessment (grading) software. It does not store your children's records of achievement. There is lots of other software available that can do that e.g. Microsoft Excel. Classmaker was built instead, to address five major lesson planning problems that I have noticed:1. Many teachers use a hand written Weekly calendar for their planning, but these change so frequently, that by the end of the week's teaching they are illegible and useless for referring to in future.2. The planning process generates huge volumes of paper. Most teachers rely on Microsoft Word documents for their planning, but do not have a robust file management process in place when storing them. It doesn't take long before they cannot find their previously taught lessons or their laptop crashes and they lose the lot!3. Effective teachers use detailed plans before they teach, created using a standardised methodology. I wanted to create a tool that made this detailed planning facet of the job as simple as possible with the final output being an easy to follow printed plan of the day's lessons that a teacher can take to class as a hard copy for their day's teaching.4. I wanted to do the forward planning directly inside the package, but you cannot plan at a Weekly level without first forming a higher level view of the weeks ahead. Enter the concept of hierarchical planning using Long Term plans (the Book), Unit plans (the Chapters) and Lesson plans (the Pages) on calendars. The idea behind the Long Term calendar, is to obtain a high level view of your term's teaching by subject to ensure curriculum coverage over a user definable "season" of time, usually terms, semesters or quarters. The Unit plan aggregates your lessons and other supporting material into a "folder" that can be copied between databases, while the Weekly calendar displays your detailed Lesson plans over a week.5. Finally, if I was going to go to all the effort of creating a new piece of software, I wanted to ensure that it could be used school-wide as a multi-user package, not just stand-alone package on individuals PC's. This raised the difficult problem of synchronisation between databases, since many teachers prefer to plan at home, but the school needs to have a record of your planning too and schools' servers generally have robust backup procedures in place that prevent work being lost. Eventually, I solved this problem, by exporting and importing entire Unit plans to/from disk. You take your laptop home at night, plan on it, export the plans to disk, return to school the next day and upload them to the server, make changes there, export them back to your laptop, go home and repeat the cycle. What makes Classmaker different? Classmaker assumes that you think using calendars not lists. It presents you with sensibly bounded (typically 6 hours in 15 minute increments) blank calendars representing your teaching day, that you fill up. A teacher's week is full of routine activities: roll calls, news and current events, fitness, reading groups, math groups, library visits, choir, assemblies, duties, syndicate meetings and staff meetings. These are entered once and appear every week at the same time. Then it is simply a case of filling in the gaps. It's amazing how stress free this approach to planning is. You can see the unallocated time remaining disappearing before your eyes each time you create a new lesson plan.Classmaker keeps all it's planning in a single database file and you can quickly navigate across years, terms and weeks to find past lessons using the buttons above the calendars.
