Introduction to StarFLIP++StarFLIP++A reusable iterative optimization libraryfor combinatorial problems with fuzzy constraintsDatabase and Expert Systems Group (E184-2)Institute of Information SystemsVienna University of TechnologyPaniglgasse 16A-1040 Wien, AustriaE-Mail: sflip@dbai.tuwien.ac.atWWW: http://www.dbai.tuwien.ac.at/proj/StarFLIP/Names of Products mentioned are used for identification purposes only andmay be Trademarks and/or registered Trademarks of their respective company. The goal of real-world decision making is to optimize somecombinatorial problem. In order to optimize, one needs criteria, whichcan be expressed for instance as constraints. Real world constraintsare usually vague and have different relative importances. Also, datacollected from unreliable sources is often slightlyincorrect. Sometimes criteria even contradict each other. Thereforecompromises are necessary. Typical application areas of combinatorialconstraint optimizers include scheduling, design, configuration, planning, and classification. Test application domains for prototypesare steel-production scheduling and classroom roostering. Toinvestigate real-world combinatorial optimization problems, we have designed and partly implemented the StarFLIP++family of C++ libraries, especially focusing on reusability andapplicability for a wide range of combinatorial problems. StarFLIP++ will ultimately be composed of the following layeredsub-libraries: the fuzzy logic inference processor library, FLIP++ the fuzzy constraint library, ConFLIP++ the dynamic constraint generation library, DynaFLIP++ the domain knowledge representation library DomFLIP++ several heuristic optimizing libraries (currently tabu search and genetic algorithm), OptiFLIP++ the userinterface, InterFLIP++, with platform support forX-Windows (XView/Open Look, Motif) and MS Windows 3.1/95/NT the HTML documentation (end-user/knowledge-engineer/programmer), DocuFLIP++ the knowledge-change consistency checker library, CheckFLIP++ the version-control and test environment for the complete library set, TestFLIP++ the simulation toolkit, SimFLIP++ the reactive optimizer, ReaFLIP++ the neural network extension that allows automatic tuning offuzzy membership functions, NeuroFLIP++ The following map gives a quick overview on the mostimportant libraries and their relation. Documentation Documentation and details aboutthose parts that have been completed so far are included in HTML and Postscript format. Additional documents on StarFLIP++ can be found in our publications included in Postscript format. System requirementsUnix: X11 (XView/Open Look orMotif), Gcc 2.7.2 MS Windows: Djgpp V2, various commercial C++compilers Precompiled demo applications The best wayto start is to look at the documentation, maybe starting withFLIP++, and then to continue with the corresponding demo applications(precompiled for SunOS 4.1.3, Linux/X11, and MS Windows). FLIP++together with InterFLIP++ are currently the visually most appealingparts of the StarFLIP++ project, but we have also included demoapplications for the other parts, and they can be found together withthe corresponding libraries and executables. More details about thesample applications can be found in the included theses and scientific publications on the StarFLIP++ project.
