Opening the Source Repository with Anonymous CVS

Charles D. Cranor, AT&T Labs--Research; Theo de Raadt, The OpenBSD ProjectAbstractAnonymous CVS is an advanced source file distributionmechanism we created to allow open source softwareprojects to distribute source code and informationabout code to Internet users. Built on top of the ConcurrentVersions System (CVS) revision control system,Anonymous CVS safely allows anonymous read-onlyaccess to a CVS source repository. Prior to the introductionof Anonymous CVS, access to a CVS repositoryhad to be restricted to a select group of privileged softwaredevelopers. The advantage of open source softwareis that it promotes reliability and quality by allowingindependent peer review and rapid evolution of sourcecode. By introducing Anonymous CVS, we have extendedthe concept of open source software projects toopen source repository projects. Having an open sourcerepository allows users to take a more active role in thedebugging and development of open source projects. Inthis paper we will examine and compare the mechanismsused by open source projects to distribute sourcecode. We will present the design and implementationof the first Anonymous CVS server (used to distributethe OpenBSD operating system). We will explain someof our concerns (e.g., security) and some of the problemswe faced when trying to adapt CVS for anonymoususe. We also will present other more recent source filedistribution mechanisms that make use of an open CVSrepository. Anonymous CVS is currently bring usedby a number of projects including OpenBSD, FreeBSD,Mozilla, Ecgs, Gnome, Python, and GNUstep.View the full text of this paper in PDF form and PostScript form.If you need the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download it from Adobe's site.To become a USENIX Member, please see our Membership Information.
