iLinkPod homepage iLinkPod 0.6 (new) (C) 2003-8 by Giancarlo Erra (giancarloerra@gmail.com) | What's new | What is iLinkPod | How to use iLinkPod | Troubleshooting - FAQ | Screenshots | Download - Donate | Disclaimer | NEWS: " Regarded as one of the most interesting up and coming alt/art rock bands in Europe, Nosound returns with its highly anticipated second album, 'Lightdark' " Support indie bands and labels appreciating and buying legal and professional music. Visit Nosound Myspace page * MAJOR NEWS AND UPDATES: FINALLY A NEW VERSION OF ILINKPOD! 1) works with Windows formatted iPods too 2) Universal Binary and rewritten from scratch! 3) will work on all iPods 4) one click backup of all your iPod library! Please consider donating! * I'm receiving daily emails from happy users of this little usefull app. I'm really glad of this and I want to thank you ALL for your support and suggestions. In a next release I'll try to implement all your ideas! Checkout FAQS to see how to search for your songs inside iLinkPod folder. "Let me get all the songs off of my iPod onto my computer. Easy, effecient, great email response from the author. This is a very good program for retrieving music files off of my iPod. AND ITS FREE! Most of the programs that do similar functions and are free aren't that good. I would totally recommend. Good job and thanks This application was fantastic. I had to do a clean install of Panther and knew that all my music was safe on my iPod,.. waiting to be pulled back into iTunes. I tried several other options with various degrees of success, usually requiring me to delete all of the iTunes files and start again, and again, and again because of file naming issues or some other problem in click-and-fix applications. iLinkPod is the solution. It was the best and most simple option - open access to the hidden files and let me drag 'em back in. I had no naming issues and what once used to be in my iTunes folder is back, EXACTLY how it used to be. Thank you! " from Versiontracker users "this works! it's a great tool, and very much appreciated. not as fancy as iPodRip, but a viable free alternative if you just want to get at your music." from an iPodLounge user "I use iPodLink at home with my 3rd. gen. iPod and it works GREAT :-)" a user via email "Hello Giancarlo, Greetings from Canada. I wanted to say thank you for you program iLinkPod. It works exactly as advertised on my 3rd generation 40Bg iPod! Now if I have a problem with iTunes it will be easy to recover my songs off of the iPod. Perfect." a user via email System requirements: * Mac OSX 10.4 or greater (not tested on 10.3 or 10.2) * BSD subsystem (included in default OSX installation) What is iLinkPod: iLinkPod is first of all a unique tool that creates a permanent and direct access from your Desktop (and your iPod or wherever you want) to the hidden folders in which iPod stores your audio files. All this in the safest way, without modifying any file/folder or configuration file of the iPod! Direct access means that you'll access your previously hidden audio files directly from the Finder, while they remain hidden! (remember: iLinkPod will not modify any properties of files on your iPod!). So you don't need iLinkPod or any other utility to access your hidden audio files on the iPod, you'll have access to them through a common folder on your Desktop (and iPod too). You don't need do execute iLinkPod again if you add or delete/modify songs on your iPod, you'll have access to your iPod as it is in that moment! And if you prefer it's now possible to perform an easy one click backup of your entire iPod library in a folder of your choice! iPodLink uses the native BSD subsystem and works at a "low", direct and safe level. I've made my best efforts to make it safe and powerful. I hope you'll enjoy it! Using iLinkPod: To launch the application double click on the icon (copy it from the dmg to your hard disk: a good place could be the Applications folder). Please turn off the auto-sync iTunes/iPod if present, and be sure the iPod is mounted on your Desktop! if not check how to enable 'hard disk mode' into iTunes or you'll be unable to use iLinkPod. First of all, you have to select your iPod (assuming it's connected to your computer and you can see it on your Desktop). So click on 'Select your iPod, and in the next dialog select your iPod or drag it directly from your Desktop into the dialog. iLinkPod will try to check if you selected correctly your iPod, then activates all the bottom buttons, and you'll be able to access all iLinkPod functions. Please beware the iPod names should contain only alphanumeric characters, no other symbols or you could get errors. Here the options of iLinkPod: * System Info (shows the iPod Devide SysInfo and a complete filesystem dump) * iLinkPod! (creates on your desktop and iPod the folder to access the hidden audio files!) * Backup (will ask you a destination folder -be sure to have enough free space!- and will backup there all music off from your iPod). * Stop (you can hit this to stop the System Info, iLinkPod and Backup actions!) All the functions of iLinkPod are pretty simple and self explained, just try them! Now we'll take a closer look to the procedure to acces the hidden audio files on iPod: * After clicking on the "iLinkPod!" button iLinkPod will do some checks, then in a few seconds you'll get some messages in the central window, with error messages (if there are errors!) and a log of the various steps iLinkPod is doing. At the end you'll get a message explaining the status of the operation, and if all is ok a new folder will popup, with several subfolders (named F00, F01 etc..) in which iTunes and iPod store your songs.! * You'll find two new folders called "iLinkPodFolder", one on your Desktop and one in your iPod. Opening one of them you'll access directly the Fxx hidden Folders of your iPod, with all your iPod songs inside! * FOLLOW CAREFULLY THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS TO AVOID MUSIC LOSS: 1) enter each Fxx folder and copy files into a folder on your hard disk 1b) this means you don't have to copy Fxx folders, but you have to enter each oneand copy files manually 1c) this means also you have to copy all the files in your hard disk, not into itunes or similar 2) check if the files are working: disconnect your iPod and try playing some of them. * The iLinkPodFolder on your iPod is probably the most useful: you can connect your iPod on your other computer, open your iPod on the Desktop and access your "hidden" files through the folder iLinkPodFolder in your iPod, without executing iLinkPod on that computer (if you want then you can simply copy the iLinkPodFolder folder to the Desktop of the other computer!). That's all! This way we've politely bypassed the "hidden files" protection, with no modification on the iPod or System files and without any additional application to use to access these files. Now you can also try the simpler way, click on Backup and wait iLinkPhone will backup your Ipod library on your hard disk in a folder you choose! (create a new one in a disk with enough free space, as always avoid any System/iTunes folder) Troubleshooting: If you encouter any problem please email me with the exact messages from iLinkPod, your OSX version, your Mac and iPod model, and all other data and circumstances that can help to understand the problem! F.A.Q.: Q) Why all songs are not organized as in my playlists but distributed in all these Fxx folders? A) iTunes and iPod store songs on the iPod hard disk in a different own way. With iLinkPod you'll get direct access to the hard disk of the iPod, so you see how songs are really stored on the hard disk of the iPod, without iTunes! (so you can for example backup songs from your iPod back to your computer). Q) Where is the feature to remove the volume limit? A) Being something valid only for old iPods and not for following updates and new iPods, to make importat things clearer I decided to drop the function. Q) How can I search for a specific file? They all strange names like ADYTR.MP3 ASDBOI.MP3 etc.. A) That's just the way iTunes/iPod store names into the iPod hard disk. iLinkPod just let you access your iPod avoiding any modiifcation to files. That's a way to be completely secure if you follow carefully the procedure, but you get the strange names. It's not a problem, there are several ways to look for a file: 1) use the freeware MP3-CMM to read ID3 tags of file directly from finder 2) use the freeware Dukko to rename files properly, ONLY AFTER COPYING THEM ON YOUR HARD DISK. Q) How can I copy and paste text from main window and/or use scrollbars? A) If you cannot see the scrollbars, just click when they should be and they'll appear (if there's text to scroll obviously). To copy/paste text from the main window, just select it and 'drag' selection. Q) I made the backup, it seems it's ok because free space on my Mac is now reduced, but I can't see backupped folders/files as they are invisible A) It seems sometimes can happen that backup is there where you saved it but it's invisible. To avoid this run iLinkPod from an Adminsitrator user. Try restarting iLinkPod, launchin again backup, selecting the same backup folder, but stopping when it asks you final confirmation before proceeding with the backup (you should have now all folders/files previously backed up in that same directory now visible). If all this fails you can follow this link or this other to make invisible files on your system visible, then you can use an app like FileBuddy to make your music files visible and restore then things for all the other files.
