MediaNetMediaNetMediaNet is a distribution network for streaming data. While themodel is fairly general, our inspiration and current target has been todetermine how to best deliver reconnaissance data (video and otherrelevantconditions) from a fleet of UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) toa network ofcommand and control centers. The technical challenge is todeliver thedata in resource-limited, small-scale (in terms of number of nodes, notnecessarily distance between them) environments meeting the preferencesand demands of thetarget control applications. The MediaNet architecture is roughly as follows It uses a computational, overlay network to manage data deliveryand user preferences. User preferences are specified as graphs ofcomputations, called continuous media networks, encoded inXML. Each node in the graph transforms the incoming stream, andsends output to zero or more downstream nodes. To ensure good quality of service, a system-widescheduler performs adaptive allocation of the nodes in the userpreferences graph to nodes in the network; more than one usercomputation may be scheduled on a single network node. Inresource-limited situations, this allocation takes into account userpreferences for adaptation. In particular, the user will specifya series of graphs, all with a corresponding "utility" indicating theuser's preference.While MediaNet currently targets multimedia streams, our model isgeneralenough to apply to more arbitrary distributed computations.
