What is "Variable Data Printing"? Variable-Data Printing, or VDP (also known as Variable Information Printing or VIP), in the classic sense, is the use of software to generate variations of a printed product. Typically, the application for VDP is in producing direct-mail marketing materials. Variable-data software will output PostScript files to the Raster Image Processor (RIP), for example, substituting name and salutation on a form letter for each recipient. Generally, the names or other variable elements are fed in from a database. Where does Web4Print come in? While we tend to talk about Web4Print in terms of variable-data printing, the Web4Print solution goes a bit further. Rather than just outputting a set of variations, Web4Print enables end-users to access print templates online and choose/supply variable components themselves, producing a unique document. The end-user can then proof a PDF (onscreen or printed out locally) at time of creation and then send the order automatically to be printed. A typical application for Web4Print is the production of business stationery for large organisations, but its flexible automatic page formatting and control of presentation make its applications nearly limitless. What about feeding variable content from a database? The default setup for Web4Print is that the customer/end-user accesses their templates online and manually makes choices of variable elements or enters necessary information themselves. We have, however, implemented custom solutions where data can be fed automatically to a template from a database. An example of such an application is outputting catalog pages where each item listing has a similar format, but consists of different images and text. Custom applications like this are generally fairly straightforward and would add minimal development cost to the standard Web4Print fees.
