Just say “Boo” to Sex Offender Fear on Halloween

10/7/2008 Ninety-four percent of all children ages 4-12 participate in Halloween each year. With so many children out at once, safety becomes a major concern. This year in particular, authorities are taking steps to ensure that registered sex offenders do not come into contact with children on Halloween night. In Missouri, sex offenders will be required to remain inside their homes between 5 and 10:30 p.m. and post a sign stating, "No candy or treats at this residence." Other states have similar laws in place designed to safeguard children from potential harm.Although the thought of your child accepting candy from a sex offender is frightening, taking some basic safety measures can help to ease your fears. Check out the NetSmartz Workshop Guide to Halloween Safety to help you prepare for a safer trick-or-treating experience, and remember to make safety a priority throughout the year.If the idea of trick-or-treating still makes you uncomfortable, consider one of the following alternativesThrow a Halloween party.Attend trick-or-treating events at local shopping malls or community centers.Organize a "trunk-or-treating" party at your children's school. Parents and guardians load their car trunks with treats in a well lit parking lot, and have children walk from car to car gathering treats.Above all, let Halloween remain a night of fun for your child. To get started, sign your kids up for Club UYN where they'll find exclusive activities for club members, including an exciting Halloween costume contest!Happy Halloween from NetSmartz Workshop! On the Road with NetSmartz!

9/24/2008 NetSmartz Outreach Team's monthly check-in…At one of our recent elementary school Internet safety presentations, we were once again reminded of the amazing ability that young children have to quickly pick up almost any concept as it relates to a computer. As our NetSmartz presenter waited to begin, a 2nd grader leaned over and innocently asked, "What are we learning about today?" The presenter began to answer, "Internet Safety—" but before she could finish, the student interrupted eagerly, "W-w-w-dot-Internet-Safety-dot-com."This simple story exposes the reality that kids (as young as 2nd grade!) have made the connection that essentially anything they want to learn can be typed into a Web browser as long as there is a "dot com" at the end of the phrase. While the thought that anything a child may want to see is a "dot com" away may scare some parents and guardians, the reality is that effective Internet safety communication, at home and in the schools, will empower our kids to use the Internet as a positive tool.NetSmartz Outreach is on the road again, continuing our work with law- enforcement officers and educators to help teach kids about keeping safer online.  We are headed to Columbus, Ohio for the Project Safe Childhood conference this week, and Des Moines, Iowa at the beginning of October. If you would like NetSmartz to come to your area, please contact us! Check back next month to see if NetSmartz is headed to a place near you! SWIM Did It!

9/17/2008 Over the past few months, various reports have surfaced in the news of teens buying drugs online. Most recently, high school students in Newtown, PA became ill after taking Snurf pills they had purchased from a website. Snurf is simply pure DXM – the medicine in most cough syrups – which reportedly produces effects similar to those of ecstasy. The list of drugs teens can buy online with nothing more than a credit card can be confusing for parents. Some teens are experimenting with hallucinogenic drugs like Herbal Ecstasy and Salvia Divinorum and posting the results on YouTube. Other teens are using digital drugs or "Binaural Beats," music which promises to simulate the effects of drugs like cocaine and heroine. Interestingly, the buying and selling of many of these drugs isn't illegal in the United States, but legal does not mean safe. Here are some ways you can approach this tricky subjectCheck out your child's online purchases. Keep in mind that the company listed on your credit card bill may be a "safe" company you might not notice. Watch for your child using the acronyms SWIM (Someone Who Isn't Me) and SWIY (Someone Who Isn't You) in their IMs or texts. These acronyms are popular in online forums and are meant to avoid blatant admissions of drug use. A typical forum entry may be, "SWIM took salvia this weekend and freaked out. SWIY should make sure to have friends there when taking it."Talk with your child! Find out what they like to do online and what sites they visit. Also, discuss your expectations for them while they're online. Remember, no amount of snooping can replace good old fashioned communication.
