Apple Offers Complimentary Repairs for Select MacBook Pro Notebooks with Nvidia ChipsOctober 10, 2008 3:41 PMChris Barylick On Friday, Apple posted details of a new service the company is offering to repair MacBook Pro notebooks affected by a flaw involving select Nvidia graphics chips. The manufacturer has also offered to reimburse customers who have already paid for a fix.According to Macworld, graphics chip maker Nvidia acknowledged a problem in some of its chips that led to a higher-than-normal failure rate. The company took a US$200 million charge against earnings to cover warranty costs associated with the problem and Nvidia’s stock took a significant hit over the news along with the company has been facing with a lawsuit alleging securities violations over the way it handled the issue.Per a technical bulletin posted to the its web site, Apple has stated that Nvidia "assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected,” the company later discovering that some MacBook Pros with Nvidia’s GeForce 8600 GT graphics processor may, in fact, be affected. For MacBook Pro owners with affected systems, symptoms can include scrambled or distorted video on the computer screen as well as a lack of video on the computer screen or external display despite the fact that the notebook is powered on.Affected systems can include the 17", 2.4 GHz MacBook Pros, 15", 2.4 and 2.2 GHz MacBook Pros, and MacBook Pros manufactured in early 2008, all with Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics chips. All such systems were made between May 2007 and September 2008.“NVIDIA has worked diligently with Apple, as we have done with all of our customers and partners, to analyze notebooks and determine the cause of such problems,” said Nvidia Director of PR and Events Derek Perez.“Our analysis shows that a failure in an Apple MacBook Pro notebook is remote. However, Apple, like other OEMs, decides on their own how to handle their warranty and repair programs, based upon their own quality standards. Regardless, we stand by our products, thus the reason why we set aside such a large reserve, and we have and will continue to work closely with Apple and their customers,” said Perez.Users can use the following steps to check which graphics card is installed on their MacBook Pro:Select "About this Mac" from the Apple menu.Click the "More Info" button.Select the "Graphics/Display" tab. From here, the System Profiler program will indicate which graphics card is installed in your MacBook Pro.Stay tuned for more details as they become available and if you've gone through this on your end, please let us know about it in the comments or forums. Apple Patent Suggests Possible Voice Commands for iPhone, iPod Touch and/or Apple TVOctober 10, 2008 9:22 AMChris Barylick According to a recently published patent, Apple may be looking to introduce voice recognition as a standard option with its iPhones, iPods and Apple TV devices. Per iPodNN, the filing concentrates on the concept of the iPhone supporting the technology but also suggests that it could be applied to other devices as well. They key addition to Apple's hardware would be the presence of a "voice-to-command analyzer," which would determine whether audio is meaningless or represents an action request as well as save other processors the burden of deciphering speech. After the initial sorting, recognized commands could trigger a macro manager, which could then execute actions from a predetermined library. Voice commands could also trigger the name of a menu or other context-sensitive commands, such as "telling" a calendar applications to display assorted contacts, etc.More iPhone-specific commands might involve controlling the camera, or choosing how to deal with voicemail or incoming calls. On devices such as an Apple TV, users might have to make use of a separate microphone, such as that on a headset to pass along commands along to another portable device, with a speaker included somewhere in the pathway to provide feedback. As of now, an unofficial form of voice recognition is already available on the iPhone through third party applications such as Vocalia. If you've heard anything about this or have your own ideas about recognition potential, let us know in the comments or forums. Delicious Library Updated to 2.0.4October 10, 2008 9:07 AMChris Barylick Late Thursday, software company Delicious Monster released version 2.0.4 of the shareware favorite, Delicious Library. Delicious Monster allows Macs with webcams to scan the bar codes of any book, movie, music CD or video game, then creates an archive based on background information from the Internet. Additional features help keep the library organized and reseller's tools allow for items to be quickly posted for sale online. The new version, a 15.3 megabyte download, incorporates the following fixes and features:Fixed a CRASHER I introduced with 2.0.3 when publishing items from iTunes. Sorry.Your published collection will now show your rating for items, not the average rating of random people on the web. [Dur.]When drawing the rating for a published item, we now draw nothing (instead of five blank stars) if your rating was 0 stars, since to Delicious Library 2 zero stars means 'I didn't fill this out' not 'I HATED this a LOT' (one star means 'hate').We had neglected to put "edition" in Delicious Library 2's list of "properties a movie can have."Due to a typo on our part, the "recommended audience" field was not showing up on many media types. It is now available for everything you can scan.Fixed a layout bug where, when editing several items in a row, sometimes fields would draw their header showing but there would be no editable box to the right of the header, or the box would be truncated. (This most often was reported in the "Location in Building" field, but could happen anywhere.)Tweaked the barcode scanner for embedded iSights to make it slightly more responsive.Fixed a rare crasher that might happen if you encounter a bug while the HUD panel is up. (This mainly helps me out, as it makes crash reports more sensible.)Delicious Library 2.0.4 requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later to run and retails for US$40.00.If you've tried the new version and have either positive or negative feedback about it, let us know in the forums. Potential Next-Gen MacBook Shots Leaked, Lower Price Point MentionedOctober 9, 2008 8:25 AMChris Barylick Following previous leaks, especially one concerning an alleged new MacBook Pro case, new shots have surfaced of what appears to be a new 13" MacBook case via Taiwanese web site Apple.pro. According to Electronista, the new images show an aluminum casing similar to that of a MacBook Air but thick enough to hold an entire array of ports as well as a slot-loading optical drive and room for a larger trackpad. And since a picture's worth a thousand words: In other news, Duncan Riley of the Inquisitor claims to have received details of a significantly expanded price list for a new MacBook range that adds four new price points, including a higher US$3,100 option as well as a new, lower US$800 price point. If accurate, this could imply the use of less expensive parts as well as a potential new model for the notebook.Stay tuned for additional details as they become available and let us know what you think over in the comments or forums. Opinion: Trying to Do the Right ThingOctober 9, 2008 8:04 AMChris Barylick Yesterday, reader Josh Campbell sent us an open letter to Apple describing his experiences with the iPhone 3G's international calling plan structure, especially for users who require international travel and a lack of cohesion among Apple Certified wireless carriers. The piece makes some relevant points and we'd like to see how your international iPhone experience compares with Mr. Campbell's:Dear Apple, I am a huge Apple supporter. I'm currently on my fourth Apple notebook, third iPod and first iPhone. In addition, I am a film editor and have worked on assorted major motion pictures. In my role as editor, I make decisions on software and hardware that are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each film. I fight for Apple products regularly and I am a big fan of Final Cut Pro.Thus, I am disheartened and distraught in my current situation. I purchased a "pay as you go" iPhone 3G from O2 UK a few weeks ago (serial number 87833U2YY7K). The phone cost 400 pounds (800 dollars) and has no monthly plan attached. At the time I was working in London. However, shortly thereafter, I got a job in Prague, Czech Republic. I will be here for months if not longer and the use of my iPhone would be a great help in my work. I purchased a "pay as you go" phone with the knowledge that I might have to move for work. I did not want to take advantage of a company, nor be beholden to a one or two year calling plan. I assumed that if I paid full price for the product, I would be allowed to use it in other countries with other Apple Certified carriers. Click the jump for the full story...
