Understanding the relationship between
Information
and Communication Technologies (ICT)
and sustainable development
Information and communication technologies (ICT) have the potential to deliver significant social and environmental benefits to individuals, communities and organisations. SustainIT, an initiative of leading charity UK CEED, focuses on the relationship between ICT and sustainable development and seeks to demonstrate how the technologies can be used to realise these benefits.
SustainIT undertakes the following activities with public, private and voluntary sector partners in the UK and across Europe:
Quantitative and qualitative research
Demonstration projects
Policy advice and guidance
Award programmes and good practice dissemination
Development of on line tools and guidance materials
Debate and engagement activities
SustainIT latest Project
UK CEED's SustainIT programme has published a new report, Making Sustainability Real, which seeks to identify how
sustainable development has been addressed in the development of
regional economic policies and strategies by the devolved
administrations of Scotland and Wales and by the Regional Development
Agencies of England. It also seeks to highlight examples of good
practice which we suggest can be built upon.
SusteIT is a new project focusing on sustainable information and communications technology (ICT) in FHE. It is financed by the sector’s IT support body, JISC, and is being managed by a partnership of HEEPI and NGO, SustainIT. The project is currently preparing a scoping study of key sustainable IT issues, and will follow this up with the development of case studies and support tools, and events. The project is conducting a baseline survey which will be available on www.views.org.uk/SUSTE-IT from Friday, 7th March. The survey has sub-sections for specific groups such as IT support staff, academics and environmental managers, so that it is relevant to everyone so please forward details after the 7 th. It also asks for examples of good practice within FHE institutions
HEEPI, in conjunction with AUDE, has also received LGM funding for a GreenBuild project. This has two components – development of a BREEAM for HE standard scheme by spring 2009, and a sustainable laboratories initiative.
The 2008 National eWell-Being Awards were announced at a prestigious awards ceremony at Shakespeare's Globe, London on Wednesday 30th April 2008. Details of winning and commended projects will appear in the Independent on Tuesday 6th May 2008.
