The rewritable printers use heat to change the information printed on the card. In Fargo’s rewritable printing process, the ribbon is actually removed from the printer and the printhead comes in contact with the card. The heat from the printhead reacts with the card’s special finish to produce the printed image. The type of finish used by the card manufacturer determines the image’s color, generally blue or black, explains Apryl Erickson, senior channel marketing manager for Fargo products at HID Global. Plans for the system began after the Virginia Tech massacre more than a year ago where a student killed 32 people and then himself.A university administrator calls the new system “multipronged.” It includes brief cell phone text and email messages. Additionally, there will be sirens that will use three different signals depending on the emergency. Students will be trained in the signals’ meanings, said the administrator. “This is something we hope we’ll never use,” the school official said. Read more here. Florida student test scores online in security breachWednesday, August 20, 2008 in NewsSome 34,000 students from one Florida school district who were using an online testing program to study for the state’s annual assessment test had their answers inadvertently posted to the Web. What’s worse is that the posting also included the students’ personal information, such as their state ID numbers which, according to this story in the Fort Myers News-Press, are nearly identical to their Social Security number.Superintendent Lori White, with the Sarasota school district, said students in second through 10th grade were involved in the breach which apparently occurred as the test preparation company moved its Web hosting to a new provider. In addition to Sarasota, Fairfax County, Va., also had student information posted online. Since then, the university has revised its privacy policy and increased its use of technology to block security breaches. “It’s an ongoing and never-ending process, basically educating staff and keeping policy current with changing technology, because we have to make sure things are secure, but also accessible so we can do our business,” said a university spokesman. Instead of having to buy a separate bus pass, all they’ll need to do is show their card. It’s all part of the university’s universal access transit system.A university spokesperson is confident the new system will cause more students to take the bus, rather than drive.
