J-Tech Engineering - Embedded Analog Digital and RF Hardware
J-Tech Engineering is the Vancouver's premier
hardware designer and consulting firm. J-Tech was formed in 1996 and specializes in
low-power, high-performance hardware design. Our customers are software companies
needing custom platforms on which to run embedded software, and companies requiring custom
hardware to give their products a competitive edge in their own market place.
Specifically, our products range from embedded microcontroller based products, to
wireless and other RF interfaces, to calibration equipment and instrumentation, to evaluation
boards and development platforms for powerful embedded control processors. Processor cores
such as Advanced RISC Machines (ARM) 720 core, sold in the Cirrus Logic packaged CL-PS7500FE
are very popular with set top box designers or anyone looking for an inexpensive low-power
versatile processor. J-Tech Engineering has expertise in the Linux operating system and
a market focus on developing hardware capable of running real time POSIX compliant
operating systems. J-Tech is highly motivated to design embedded products around the
SA-1100 StrongARM processor, as well as the ARM9 cores from Advanced RISC Machines.
These products are viewed as the future of the battery powered internet appliance market.
They offer such high processing bandwidth at such a low-power consumption that they cannot be
ignored. In addition, the ready availability of a Linux port to this core makes it extremely
attractive.
Looking for a means of producing that critical embedded platform
on which to run your application?
Spending more time on schematic capture, circuit board layout,
component procurement, and assembly house interfacing than you'd like to?
Want to spend more of your valuable time developing your application,
operating system or firmware than worrying about whether there will be a
product to run it on?
Developed your product or completed your proof of concept using
off-the-shelf hardware, and now find yourself in need of a custom hardware
platform to increase your profit margin?
Have a great product idea and have even identified a hot market,
but need some assistance bringing that product to reality?
J-Tech Engineering may be the solution you're looking for.

Some examples of our work are listed here:
Reference platform for the Cirrus Logic
PS7211 and EP7209 RISC processor (ARM7TDMI core), including interfaces to keyboard,
multiple LCD displays, touch screen overlay, PCMCIA interface, USB port, 10BaseT
ethernet, 16Mbytes DRAM, 16Mbytes flash, 32Mbytes NAND flash, SmartMedia interface,
RS-232 ports, IrDA, parallel port, 16-bit stereo sound, and local switching supplies.
This board also features a module site for mounting different processors
in different packages (such as BGAs) on the main board. This evaluation board served
as a basis for future products developed at Cirrus, including the ep7309 and ep7312
evaluation board. This board could have either the processor dropped directly onto
the board, or a daughter module. The daughter module would have either the ep7309, or the
ep7312 in any of the lqfp or bga packages offered by Cirrus Logic.
Software port of ARM 'demon'
debug monitor with additional flash programming interface for customer's
proprietary Cirrus Logic CL-PS7500FE (ARM710C core) based platform. The flash
suite was for burning Intel Strataflash. Although the Angel Debug monitor was considered
as a candidate for porting, this was rejected as at that time the product was not stable
enough or well enough documented to be ported. In this case, the customer's mandate
was to port a POSIX compliant operating system on which to run his software. Porting
Linux to the platform was considered, but at that time, a little premature. This is
certainly an area of interest for J-Tech.
Reference platform for the Cirrus
Logic CL-PS7500FE RISC (ARM 710C core) processor, including interfaces to keyboard,
mouse, serial ports, IrDA, parallel port, ISA slots, 10BaseT ethernet, VGA/LCD/NTSC
displays, modem, 16-bit stereo audio and local switching power supplies.
Modular Uninterrupted Power Supply
for supplying DC power to the electric brakes of a DC powered ladle crane in
a steel plate mill, including charge voltage temperature compensation.
This unit is capable of sourcing up to 1350 Watts of power for 10 minutes.
This application was based upon a Microchip PIC16C71 microcontroller.
All software was written in house, in assembly language.
Instrumentation hardware and software
for industrial gas flow meter calibration, including a constant temperature oven
for analogue component stability, 24-bit sigma-delta ADC converter and platinum
RTD sensor. This application involved generating complete control software
(in C) for communicating with the ADC, oven controller, host PC (RS-232), and gas
flow meter (also RS-232).
Multi-line telephone interface module
for TMS320Cxx, TMS320C54x, and TMS320C2xx processors. This product was a
daughter-module intended for mounting on the customer's existing DSP platform.
The design supported multiple module stacking such that up to four complete telephone
interfaces could be operated simultaneously. The boards operated by daisy-chaining
serial interfaces and operating the DSP's serial port in a TDM mode. This allowed
additional codecs to be added to the same serial interface as needed. The telephony
interfaces could be used as either a modem, a fax receiver and transmitter, or a voice
interface.
Full-featured telephone containing a RISC
(CL-PS7110 or CL-PS7111, ARM710a core) and DSP (TMS320C50/C548) processor architecture with
a cold-cathode florescent back-lit LCD display (including a Royer class switching supply
for the back-light inverter), touch screen overlay, Smart Card interface, Mini-Card
interface and full keyboard. The LCD in the unit is 320x240, 16 shades of
grey. Inter-processor communication was accomplished via a dual-port RAM in
the initial version of the telephone, but was later migrated to use the host port
interface found on the TMS320C548.
Microcontroller based superregenerative
radio receiver for VHF band radio-controlled applications. Used in logging
industry. Specifically, this unit was used in the implementation of a radio controlled
logging choker. This unit analyses a base-band data stream demodulated by the
receiver, and controls the rotational angle of a servo based on received information.
This design is based upon an 8-bit ultra low cost microcontroller.
The superregenerative receiver was chosen for the reason that no crystals or oscillators
are required. The lack of crystals is desirable as the application environment
is subject to impacts of up to 10,000Gs. An extremely robust mounting technique
was developed to allow the board to survive in the application environment.
Feasibility studies of local ringing SLIC
interface designs and DSP based PCMCIA telephony card designs.

For the sake of those pesky search engines, we'd like to clarify one or two more points here. If you aren't a crawler, this will be of little value to you!
We'd like to be found when searching for jtech engineering, or possibly jtech, or maybe JTECH ENGINEERING, or perhaps JTECH, or even in a pinch, J-TECH.
The CL-PS7500FE from Cirrus Logic is also known as a PS7500, a PS7500FE, a 7500FE and even on rare occasions as a plain old 7500.
The CL-PS7110 from Cirrus Logic is also known as a PS7110 or a 7110.
The CL-PS7111 from Cirrus Logic is more colloquially referred to as a PS7111 or a 7111.
The EP7209 from Cirrus Logic is more commonly known as a 7209.
The EP7211 from Cirrus Logic is occasionally referred to as a CL-PS7211, or a PS7211 or possibly even a 7211.
Many of the above products find great application in embedded hardware designs, most specifically PDAs (a PDA), or Personal Data Assistants. They are also extremely useful in set top box designs, and even MP3 players.
Superregeneration as a concept predates the superheterodyne receiver. Although radios employing superregeneration have the advantage of mechanical durability, they suffer from a broad receiving bandwidth, especially when using low Q inductors.
