The PEVMis based on the Sun Microsystems Laboratories Virtual Machine forResearch (ResearchVM), which features an optimizing Just-In-Timecompiler, exact generational garbage collection, and fast threadsynchronization. It also uses a new, scalable persistent objectstore designed to manage more than 80GB of objects. The PEVM isapproximately ten times faster than previous OPJ implementationsand can run significantly larger programs. It is faster than orcomparable in performance to several commercial persistencesolutions for the Java platform. Despite the PEVM's speed andscalability, its implementation is simpler than our previous OPJimplementation (e.g., just 43% of the VM source patches needed byour previous OPJ implementation). Its speed and simplicity arelargely due to our pointer swizzling strategy, the ResearchVM sexact memory management, and a few simple but effectivemechanisms.
