Startup information :The story :You were one of these ZX Spectrum fans,and had zillions of tapes. You even made programs at that time, and stillhave them on tape.Now, the spectrum has disapeared but it's soul survive through theemulators on the PCs. All games have been converted to .tap or .tzx files.All ? Well, all except your favorite programs still on the damned tapesyou still have.The good news :Don't throw your tape yet. This is a program that REALLY works on allmodern configuration. It just needs a win32 OS (windows >= 95 or windowsNT >= 4 ), a sound card and the cable to plug a tape device ( walkman,hifi, boombox...) to the sound card IN line. Sound card sellers usuallygive one cable with the card and if you're lucky it directly fits in yourtape device (especially HIFI, although walkman is the best fit for loadingyet).This program will directly load your program from tape and save itin a tzx format. Have a try, you'll be surprised how easy it is.The bad news :This product is not magical. It can only load what a real spectrumcan load ( or may be some more but not much more ). Your tapes might bebadly damaged since the time they were created, especially if you storedthem near a TV, you HIFI speakers or on the heater of your room! If thetape doesn't load any more on a speccy, it is probably damaged and unrecoverable.In this case, STL won't work ...Also, STL unfortunally eats a lot of CPU while in direct loading mode( about 120 Mhz of a pentium ). If you have a weak CPU, direct loadingwon't work and then STL might be less attractive than TAPER (but stillmuch more friendly. It explains at least why the tape doesn't load in console).This is the only available documentation. I have no time to make a helpfile. If you want to volunteer, you're welcome.The friendy warning :Although nobody ever succeded in blowing up his sound card using thisprogram, there is still a possibility if you are not carefull ! If youdon't want to break that statement, use light tape device volume beforefinal calibration (use console signal to check). NEVER try this with tapedevice max volume at first. Signal can go loud after if the console showsit fits into the window.What's new since STL version 1:Speedlock 1 and 2 supported.All time units in T times. It is something important for the spectrumcommunity I think.New button to control the open/close of sound flow inside thePC cardFull TZX support. It means TZX load and TZX transformation of signalfor bad or SL1/2 signals.Bugs fixed in blocks deletionOptimizations in signal realtime loading ( for lesser CPUs) : mightwork on 75 pentiums.What's not new since STL version 1 :If your programs didn't load under STL1.0, there is only one nice option: RTFM : read the documentation of the version 2.0, it can help you tounderstand how STL works and then TRY AGAIN version 1.0 (more stable).If it didn't load under 1.0 and it was a normal ROM loading routine,then version 2.0 will not help you unless you let it guess the timings ( You could have done this in V1, It would have worked in tick times)The real thing plus screen captures:The source code is here, version 2.0. The program is here, version 2.0. Hopefully, this version has no more dependencies with the msvcirt.dll.
