FreeDOS-32 (or FD32 for short) is a 32-bit operating system under development
for the IA-32 (also known as i386) platform, distributed under the terms of the
GNU General Public License.
Its MultiBoot compliant minimal
core aims to allow total control and full customization, providing a default
protected mode environment as simple as possible: no memory protection, no paging
and no multitasking, even no file system. Features can be added by loading appropriate
modules or drivers.
It could be a good environment for running
DPMI
applications, but also for developing embedded systems based on low-cost x86 boards.

Project newsProgress newsWe have a preliminary, but working, support for VM86, to run legacy DOSapplications, most notably real mode stubs that start protected modeapplications. This allows to run DOS protected mode applicationswithout special modifications, for example we have managed to run theMpxplay MP3 player. We have a new, improved,FAT driver,ATAPI CD-ROM and ISO 9660 file system drivers to access compact discs (although withsome limitations), the keyboard driver has been improved to supportkeymaps and the kernel includes some support for processes. We plan torelease our 0.0.6 alpha before the end of the year. That would belikely the last 0.0.x series, as deep rearrangement is in progress in aseparate branch: using a new libc for the kernel, new memory managementcode, new low-level kernel code, better modularity and of course bettersupport for applications.Salvo Isaja - 2005-12-02Source code rearrangementThe drivers CVS module and the drivers directory of thefd32 CVS module have been merged. Now there is a single modulesdirectory in the fd32 CVS module, containing all the FreeDOS-32 modulesand drivers.
