Checking out your NIC

Published in February 22nd, 2002 Posted by admin in Test2 No Comments Most network cards now-a-days autonegotiate their speend based on what the other end of your network cable will do. To see the speed of your card, as root, run mii-tool (part of the net-tools rpm).root@host]# /sbin/mii-tooleth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link okYou can get better performace by hard coding the speed and duplex. Since most NICs are jumperless, you need a tool to do this. Again mii-tool comes to the rescue.root@host]# /sbin/mii-tool -F 100baseTx-FDroot@host]# /sbin/mii-tooleth0: 100 Mbit, full duplex, link okroot@host]# So there you have it, your NIC is now hard coded to full duplex, 100 Mbit. Why would you want to do this? Well by hard coding this value you prevent your NIC from renegotiating its speed which it might do and come in at a lower speed.Bookmark this postAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to Del.icio.usAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to diggAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to FURLAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to blinklistAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to redditAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to Feed Me LinksAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to TechnoratiAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to Yahoo My WebAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to NewsvineAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to SocializerAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to Ma.gnoliaAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to Stumble UponAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to Google BookmarksAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to SquidooAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to SpurlAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to BlinkBitsAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to RojoAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to BlogmarksAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to ShadowsAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to Co.mmentsAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to ScuttleAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to BloglinesAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to TailrankAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to OKnotizieAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to NetscapeAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to Bookmark.itAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to AskAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to SmarkingAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to Live-MSNAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to SeotribuAdd 'Checking out your NIC' to Upnews

Gaim: an AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) client for Linux

Gaim: an AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) client for Linux

There was a time, believe it or not, when anybody who dared to run Linux ontheir desktop PC had to struggle in order to find the tools that were commonin the Windows environment. Applications such as Quicken, Word Perfect orMS Word, Excel, ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger did not have any equivalentin the Linux world. Of course, the UNIX world itself was also affected bythe same problem. It appeared as if this was a world where only developers, system administrators and scientists had a place and UNIX and Linuxworkstations were used to… well, work. But these days all this situation has changed quite a bit. Linux has movedto the center stage, and many people even view it as an alternative toWindows and the MacOS. More and more people are using it not only at workbut also at home. Linux developers have managed to either port theapplications we just talked about, or cloned them in some cases. Then, there are also some other instances where they managed to create somethingthat was even better than the original Windows application. The worldof instant messaging could be an example of the latter. Not only didLinux developers manage to port these applications to Linux (e.g. the
