Over the years, more than hundred researchers have worked at the laboratory. They have built a large number of artificial systems to investigate aspects of intelligence: knowledge systems, autonomous robots, machine learning systems, natural language processing components, design and implementation tools. See our publications.  The robotic fish built at the AI-Lab (1992) Currently, the laboratory focuses on two research themes: origins of language and robotic agents. Members of the laboratory teach introductory and advanced courses in artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.  Large scale experiment on language origins with robotic agents (1999-2000) News Meeting on Artificial Intelligence profile for Master students (21/09/2007) We will organise a meeting in which we will discuss the current contents of the Artificial Intelligence profile in the first year Masters in Computer Science. This meeting will take place on friday September 28th in the meeting room of the Artifcial Intelligence Laboratory (10G725) at 10 am. After this discussion the course 'Language as a Complex Adaptive System' will kick off at the same location. Sicily Evolution of Language Summerschool (28/03/2007) A summerschool will be held in Erice (Sicily), from 14-19 July 2007, organised by Luc Steels and Vittorio Loretto. It surveys research on language evolution from the viewpoint of complex systems science, linguistics and computational linguistics. The main school brings together about 30 lecturers, with linguists including: Ben Bergen, Bill Croft, Bruno Galantucci, Susan Goldin-Meadow, Jean-Marie Hombert, Jim Hurford, Laura Michaelis, Bill Wang. There is a specialised atelier on using computational construction grammar for modeling language evolution with exercises and hands-on experience. Talks in the United States (28/03/2007) Between April 8th and April 12th professor Luc Steels will give several talks on the origins of language at two distinguished univeristies in the United States, namely Stanford University and UC Berkley. Crystalpunk (15/02/2007) On the 13th of January Luc Steels had an interesting talk in Utrecht on his recent breakthroughs. On the Bonanza of Origins event, organised by Crystalpunk, he erred in good company of various scientists who presented their latest scientific results. Click here for more information. 50th anniversary of Artificial Intelligence: the aftermath (9/02/2007) On 23rd of November, the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory has celebrated the 50th anniversary of Artificial Intelligence by means of a symposium which highlighted the Flemish contributions to this scientific discipline. Talking Robots (24/11/2006) The Laboratory of Intelligent Systems (EPFL) organises an interesting podcast in which they interview professionals in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence every two weeks. The latest episode features a fascinating interview with veteran Prof. Steels in which he shares his views on language evolution and genetic basis for language, and the importance of embodiment and robot experiments for understanding communication. You can subscribe to this podcast on its homepage or download the complete interview (mp3, 13MB). 50th anniversary of Artificial Intelligence (5/10/06) The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Artificial Intelligence on 23rd November 2006. The different achievements of the broad Flemish AI research will be highlighted. This celebration will be held in the beautiful Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten near the royal palace in Brussels. Registration is free of charge but obligatory. Open House for Internships and Theses (12/05/06) On Thursday 18th May, the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory will organise an open house in which the different internship- and thesisproposals will be presented. Most proposals will focus on the origins of language which is the main research topic of our lab. The target audience of this event are second last year students who will have to do an internship and write a thesis next year. This event will start at 11am and will be located at the Meeting Room of the laboratory (10G725). Le Cas de Sophie K. (26/04/06) Sofia Kowalevskaia was one of the most intriguing mathematical personalities of the 19th century. Jean-François Peyret et Luc Steels wrote a a theatre play about this intriguing personality that premiered at the Theatre Festval in Avignon this summer and will now be performed from 26th April to 27th May 2006 in the National Theatre in Paris (Theatre Chaillot). The cultural service (Dienst Cultuur) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussels organizes an excursion to one of the shows on 19th May 2006. Please visit this site for more details.
