THC BBS Turns 20Jul. 09, 2007Those of you who first visited artofhacking.com and its proto-sites(like "Fixer's Tech Room") less than about 7 years ago may not be awarethat before artofhacking.com, there was a dialup BBS called THC - shortfor Tommy's Holiday Camp - where hacking and phreaking textfiles werestockpiled and downloaded in great numbers, and these same subjects werethe focus of much forum-style discussion. Very much as AOH is today.The BBS, however, was much more than that, and much broader in itsinterests and appeal than AOH is now. Games, dating/matchmaking,software downloads, chat among locals, the full slate of newsgroup-like"echomail" channels that wanted to be Usenet when they grew up. And allthe porn you could eat. What it lacked was a large audienceoutside its local dialup area, but then a little thing called the Webcame along, and dialup BBSes either became fossils or evolved, as THCdid, into websites.Today, July 9, 2007, is the 20th anniversary of the founding of thedialup BBS that eventually became this web site.THC BBS still exists as an entity of its own, at thcbbs.com. As it was 20 years ago, today it doesn'tget a lot of traffic - its heyday came and went like the summer and fallin which it occurred. It's not the Commodore 64 Blue Board it was when Ronald Reagan was the leader of the Free World, rather a phpBB like the AOH BBS, but it's there nevertheless, and who knows, maybe it's due for acomeback.AOH BBS Open to new users againJun. 24, 2007The Artofhacking.com BBS has been re-opened to new users. Back in February we were experiencing a major flood of new accounts being created by spambots that target the phpBB software used on the AOH BBS. Unfortunately, phpBB didn't (and still doesn't) ship with the kind of bulk user management tools we need to screen a large number of new accounts at once. In order to avoid AOH becoming a spam haven for every sex drug and so-called hot stock tip on the net, we had to temporarily close the door on new accounts. In the mean time, those needed management tools have now been written in-house and are proving very effective. The BBS is now open, come on in and pour yourself a beer and share your stories, questions, answers and general thoughts with the AOH community! And of course, no spam please.Another lost AOH archive restored!Feb. 20, 2007After a five-year absence, the Game Sniper Archive (formerly called "Game Sniper 2000") has returned! This was an immensely popular part of the site and it was heartbreaking to have to take it down. However, with our former ISP and its bandwidth limitations long behind us, we have been on a program of restoring old archives and introducing new ones for some time now, and Game Sniper is the last of the removed former archives that needed to be restored.Although new titles stopped being added in 2001, we have recently added a few dozen newer files to the archive (check out the "H" section under "Harry Potter", plus others) and we should be fully up to date within a few months. After that, the archive will be updated several times a year as all our other archives are.As with all our archives, Game Sniper is free and requires no logon or anything from you - just surf in and enjoy!Older Bulletins...
