Open Source versus proprietary GIS software Flagis, de Vlaamse vereniging voor geografische informatie systemen, organiseert op 17 april 2008 een studiedag "GIS voor het grijpen" uitsluitend opgezet rondom dit thema. Hierbij wil men het fenomeen ‘software’ en haar ‘business modellen’ onderzoeken vanuit een historisch perspectief, met het oog op het detecteren van toekomstige trends. Tal van sprekers uit de groep van de gebruikers, de onderzoekswereld en de leveranciers/dienstverleners doen hun opmerkelijk verhaal. Onlangs is PostGIS 1.1.1 uitgebracht. Geen nieuwe mogelijkheden, wel meer stabiliteit. PostGIS begint een steeds completer product te worden en wordt meer en meer gebruikt als "echte" geodatabase oplossing i.p.v. wat coördinaten in een normale relationele database. Zeker in webtoepassingen, zoals geGIS, is PostGIS aan een ware opmars bezig.

Het is een desktop GIS-viewer/editor gebaseerd op Java waarvan de broncode en de applicatie gratis beschikbaar zijn via een LGPL Open Source Licentie.
