ISPs still considering tracking Web use
Submitted by actz
Thursday, 26 June 2008
Although a large Internet service provider has backed away from technology that tracks subscribers' Web use in order to deliver personalized advertising, two other broadband companies said Wednesday they are still considering whether to deploy it.Phone companies Embarq Corp. and CenturyTel Inc. have both completed trials of the same tracking system, from online advertising company NebuAd Inc., and are now considering whether to proceed. The largest U.S. Internet provider that had been actively looking at Web tracking, Charter Communications Inc., announced Tuesday that it had canceled its planned test because customers had raised concerns.Full Article The last comment was by: jamie Comments (1)
Gates exits, leaving Ballmer in Microsoft spotlight

Thursday, 26 June 2008
Bill Gates' retirement from Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) later this week marks the end of an era for the software giant, thrusting CEO Steve Ballmer into the spotlight during one of the most challenging periods in the company's history. The departure of Gates, who will remain the company's non- executive chairman, coincides with an escalating rivalry with Google Inc (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and other competitors who are using the Internet to chip away at Microsoft's software dominance.Full Article Noone has commented yet Comments (0)

Google Earth now on your browser
Submitted by actz

One of the most interesting things that happened at Google’s I/O conference today was the launch of Google Earth browser plugin. This doesn’t mean that Google Maps is on its way to the dustbin just yet. Google Maps will not serve Google Earth’s imagery; it merely gives developers a way to build mashups using Google Earth, too. And it means we’ll be seeing a lot of cool 3D geomashups (remember, Google Earth is 3d, Google Maps are 2d) all over the place in the future. The really cool thing is that you can turn existing Google Maps mashups into Google Earth mashups using a single line of code. Of course, Google Earth API lets you do stuff you couldn’t do with Maps: you can control the camera, create lines and markers, add polygons, as well as import 3D models and overlay them anywhere you like. Google Sky is also available, which I’m sure will result in some nifty space mashups. The plugin is already available for installation at Google Earth API official site; you can see an introductory video below. Windows 7 demo: all multitouch and no meat

D6, the sixth annual All Things Digital conference, kicked off yesterday with a session starring Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. Discussion spanned topics ranging from the failed Yahoo acquisition to the lukewarm reception Windows Vista has had to the impact that Gates' imminent departure will have on the company. It was for another reason, however, that this session was so keenly anticipated: it was to contain the first public look at Windows 7. Recent revelations from Microsoft have suggested that Windows 7 will be far more evolutionary than its radical predecessor; this was confirmed by last night's demonstration. Related Stories Gates: Windows 7 will "take less memory, be more efficient" Whereas Windows Vista had a huge amount of public build-up, Microsoft has so far kept pretty quiet about Seven. Details about Vista were talked about in public seemingly non-stop from about 2003 until its eventual release in late 2006. As is now well-known, Vista didn't deliver all of the features promised during its extended development, and the widespread negative perception of the OS has undoubtedly hurt both the Microsoft and Windows brands. The tack being taken with Seven is very different. Microsoft is deliberately keeping quiet about Windows 7 to attempt to ensure that the company can actually ship everything it promises in late 2009/early 2010. Microsoft still after Yahoo...

Monday, 19 May 2008
Microsoft announced Sunday afternoon it has issued another proposal to Yahoo that calls for a transaction with Yahoo, but would not involve the acquisition of all of Yahoo's assets. The announcement comes just days after billionaire investor Carl Icahn launched a proxy fight to unseat Yahoo's current board at the Internet search pioneer's upcoming July 3 annual shareholders meeting.Icahn, a large Yahoo stakeholder, aimed to pressure the search company to restart talks with Microsoft, after the software giant withdrew its unsolicited buyout bid of $33 a share on May 3. Facebook talks with Google about Friend Connect
Submitted by actz
Monday, 19 May 2008
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to sit down with Google and work out the privacy issues that caused Facebook to block Google's Friend Connect last week, he said Monday."We want to talk to Google about this and see if there's a way we can make it work," said Zuckerberg at a news conference in Tokyo. He was in the Japanese capital to launch the a local-language version of the social networking site.Google Friend Connect allows Web site operators to add social networking functions to their Web sites. Users visiting the sites will be able to interact with new people or existing friends from social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut and Plaxo. It's the possibility of data redistribution to third-party sites by Google that caused Facebook to block access, it said last week."Part of the issue with Google's Friend Connect is that when users grant access to Google's product, Google might share their information with another application, or some part of it, maybe not all of it, without that user knowing. And part of what makes our system work is that people know exactly who they are sharing all their information with," he said.More Info Noone has commented yet Comments (0)

Is Skype messing with my browser?
Submitted by actz
Friday, 16 May 2008
Well in short YES Skype now feels that by default they can manipulate web pages by adding a little Skype icon to every number you see online. Its called Skype Browser Add-ons and ActiveX controls which you must have agreed them to enable when you downloaded and installed the application. I find it very sneaky how Skype has added this feature in without warning or asking the user if they would like this feature to be enabled. In a way they are going against terms and conditions of actual website owners by changing the page to support Skype. Its a great marketing move but seems sleazy to me. Read on to find out how to disable Skype add-ons in your web browser. The last comment was by: wiivmurx Comments (2)

Gates Provides More Windows 7 Details
Submitted by actz
Thursday, 15 May 2008
Bill Gates may be about to retire from the day to day activities of Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) , the company he co-founded 33 years ago, but he's still a card carrying tech visionary and since he's still the chairman of the board and the largest stockholder, he can spout off about new products and technologies as much as he wants. After all, what are they going to do? Fire him? That has been the case a couple of times recently when Gates pulled the curtain aside slightly to let his audiences see what's coming next – and that is Windows 7. The only problem was that he didn't show much leg above the knees. "We're hard at work … on the next version, which we call Windows 7. I'm very excited about the work being done there ... to be lower power, take less memory, be more efficient, and have lots more connections up to the mobile phone," Gates told an audience in Tokyo attending the Windows Digital Lifestyle Conference, according to a transcript of the speech. That is, Windows 7, will use less electricity more effectively, not be as much of a resource hog as Vista, and will be more closely integrated with mobile phones, including Microsoft's own Windows Mobile system, of course. internetNews Noone has commented yet Comments (0)
