MCnurbs is a set of VectorScript/MiniPascal based tools for DiehlGraphsofts VectorWorks 8-9 and MiniCad version 7.0. It adds the abilityto quickly generate spline based super smooth looking 3D surface modelsin VectorWorks / MiniCad, so called NURB surfaces.Uses for MCnurbs.So, who needs MCnurbs? Probably most VectorWorks / MiniCad users creating3D models more complex than cubes and cylinders. It can for example be usedfor creating smooth looking terrain models using a very limited number ofcontrol points (yes, it is compatible with the Terrain Modeler unit), curved(or double curvature) walls and roofs with variable cross sections, bridges,roads, furniture, tubes (with variable cross sections), mechanical components,industrial design, etc. MCnurbs simply adds a surprising amount of 3D modelingpower to VectorWorks / MiniCad.Hardware.MCnurbs requires VectorWorks 8, MiniCad version 7.0 or later. It requiressome additional RAM compared to standard VectorWorks / MiniCad set-up (+3-5 MB). A Power Mac or Pentium is highly recommended since the MCnurbscommands rely heavily on processor speed, and 68nnn and 486 machines donot have a reasonable amount of power.Some basic concepts.Since NURB surfaces are not a generic part of VectorWorks/MiniCad we havehad to use a number of work-arounds to make it work. You will not alwaysbe able to use the standard tools and methods in VectorWorks/MiniCad, suchas for example the 'Shape' item in the Object Info palette. Instead, wehave created a database called 'MCnurbs settings' located in the 'Data'item of the Object Info palette.In the MiniCad version, the tools are all located in a floating commandpalette called "MCnurbs", and you run the commands by double clickingon them. The VectorWorks version has the same functions, but they are locatedin the Model menu and in the 3D palette. MCnurbs elements are not genericdrawing elements and are therefore not "live" objects in the samesense as a rectangle, which can be resized at any time. To update a MCnurbsobject, select the Recalculate command. This command automatically recalculatesthe model based on the locations of the ruler points and the settings inthe MCnurbs setting database.Another difference ordinary VectorWorks/MiniCad objects is that you canonly have one 'active' MCnurbs object in the drawing at the time (note thata MCnurbs object may consist of up to 32000 standard MiniCad elements).To be able to interact between different MCnurbs objects you have to groupa surface before you can start working on another surface. When a surfaceis grouped, the Recalculate command will not see this particular surface,and you are then free to "open/ungroup" another surface to workon it. The components can also be stored on your hard disk as a small textfile (usually about 17K).Two basic object creation methods can be used. The first method resemblesExtrude in VectorWorks/MiniCad, and connects the 3D-spline rulers using3D polygons (1). It allows you to extrude closed cross sections shapes suchas tubes (2). The second method is NURB based (3), allowing you to createsmooth 3D meshes, and setting the number of intermediate polygons in anyway you like (within the given boundaries). This method has the same limitationas the Terrain Modeler in the sense that it can not create closed objects,or objects with overhangs (4). Unlike the Terrain Modeler, panels can howeverbe oriented in the Front/Back, Top/Bottom, or Right/Left (Side) views. Working with MCnurbs.Surface definitions can be created by using one of the New Extrusion, NewSurface, or New Sweep tools, by importing previously stored surfaces, orby simply placing a number of 3D loci in special control ruler classes (upto 64 rulers and each ruler may have up to 256 loci). Run on the Recalculatecommand to generate the surface. Move, rotate, resize, add or delete controlpoints, change the settings in the MCnurbs settings database (and changemethod, resolution, direction, etc.), and the Recalculate command againto update. That's It! The MCnurbs Setting database.The MCnurbs setting database allows you to change the specifications ofa surface: The number of polygons used in the model can be set individually in the horizontal and vertical direction. The surface can be subdivided using fixed section step distances or evenly distributed along the surface, and individually for the horizontal and vertical direction. Cross sections can also be individually moved along the surface by introducing a section offset. A surface has four display options (you can use any combination of them). The options are: Show control rulers Show cross sections Show 3D loci at surface corners Show surface as 3D polygonsThe picture below shows some examples using the same surface controlpoints, but with different database settings.

Goto Adobe.The demo version has the following limitations: The number of polygons is limited to 100 (10x10 polygons). Surfaces consist of 3D lines (normally surfaces), so you will not be able to render the model or apply a color or surface map. The ability to generate cross sections, triangulated surfaces, and 3D loci vertex definitions does not work.
