Since 1992, Bach has been available as shareware, and I thank you for all
your support. Recently I decided the next release of
Bach to be free for home users, students and
academics. (There will be a licence fee for the other categories of users!) Those who paid the licence fees in the past will continue to
receive my personal help by email. The idea is that all the free users will be asked to help
themselves, so that I can concentrate on my own work. I hope this is a fair deal!

To use these new fonts, you are expected to be familiar with how to install
and use Bach (release 4.0). If you are not familiar with these, please read the
instructions in the "Bach" package. As for the new Bach font itself, there will
be little changes from version 4. Thus the changes are mainly made to the
additional features made available as separate fonts described above.
Until recently, Mac users were unable to use the latest version of Bach
(4.0), as I no longer use Mac for my own work. But recent arrival of OS X for
Mac means that Mac users can now use Windows TrueType fonts. So this particular
issue has been resolved.
Finally, I wish to say thanks to all the registered
users in the past, as well as those who gave me encouraging comments. I am sure
this is right that Bach is to become a freeware. I am still looking for someone
who would kindly setup a BBS for user support of Bach 5.

What is Bach?
Bach
is a software font for
Microsoft Windows
and
Apple Macintosh.
Bach
contains a comprehensive set of
musical symbols but retains the normal English character set in a standard
Roman type-face (see
sample
and
charactermap

Bach
is a font for writing essays or compiling databases which
need to have some musical symbols in them. Note that
Bach
is not
a font for musical score editors, such as Coda's
Petrucci
or Adobe's
Sonata.
Unlike such fonts, the musical characters in
Bach
are sized and
spaced out so that they can be used in a sentence.

In
Bach, line spacing and beamed symbols are available
from quaver to hemidemisemiquaver.
If you try to use
Petrucci
or any other music
fonts for score editors in a wordprocessor, line spacing will be badly
affected (as you can see here.) Besides, there is no beamed symbols. You
need to add beams later by hand.
The musical symbols in
Bach
follow the standard convention found
in many academic books and journals. Instead of using a musical example,
many musical symbols are embedded in sentences; it is often easier and
sufficiently informative to quote a specific elements of music, such as
pitch, chords or rhythms that are focused upon in the discussion. In this
way, the sentence is constructed in a continuing flow, without requiring
a break to accommodate a large, complex musical example.

Background
Bach
was originally designed for use in a spreadsheet to create
a database for manuscript study (see the image left).
This specific environment demanded that the font should contain both
the normal English character set and a comprehensive set of musical symbols.
This is why most of the music symbols in Bach are allocated to the locations
above 7-bit ASCII range which cannot be typed easily. Accidentals are allocated
to the keyboard accessible range, as they are always accompanied by alphabetical
characters.

Unlike other commercial music fonts,
Bach
is a text font and is
fully compatible with normal applications, such as wordprocessor, spreadsheet
and database programs
With
Bach
you can write musicological sentences with this one font
alone. If you use a spreadsheet or a database (under which you are normally
permitted to use only one font per field / record), this font is probably
the only option for you
Endless varieties of notational patterns (up to hemidemisemiquavers) and
ornaments (e.g., doppelt cadence und mordant) can be created by combingthe characters in the font
