Welcome to Computers for Retirees
Maybe you've been wondering what all the fuss is about. Perhaps your son or daughter has been encouraging you to "get with the times." Or maybe you've recently retired and are anticipating a slew of newfound free time.
Whatever your reason for jumping on the technology bandwagon, you're not embarking on that journey alone.
According to an April 2006 study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, about 73 percent of all U.S. adults are online. That number is also high (71 percent) for baby boomers ages 50 to 64 who are entering retirement age. It drops to 32 percent for seniors 65 and older, according to the Pew study.
But computer newcomers - both young and old, teens and seniors - are often plagued with doubts when faced with a technology that doesn't come natural to them.
Is the computer age even relevant to me? Why should I bother? How can I possibly catch up?
True, our society's children and grandchildren will likely be exposed to a computer before taking their first step, and those entering retirement age might not have grown up with technology.
But the pairing of PCs and retirees / seniors is a perfect match. Computers can open up a new world, helping us keep up with the times, stay in touch with family and friends and exercise our minds through continuing education. And if you've recently retired, that's at least 40 more hours a week that you have to spend on your new hobby.
The goal of this book is to ease the fears and concerns and help you replace them with confidence and knowledge. You'll meet other seniors and retirees who have gone through what you're about to go through and learn from their mistakes and their successes. You'll hear about the computer in simple terms, but also learn the lingo so you'll know what someone is talking about when they babble on about "a gig of RAM" and a "DVD drive."
