GVC staff worked to strengthening the technology infrastructure of selected nonprofit organizations through efficient use of leveraged funds, infusion of human resources, training and technical assistance. To meet this challenge, GVC staff trained and deployed AmeriCorps*VISTA Members—the domestic Peace Corps—into nonprofit organizations and agencies serving low-income communities throughout the region. Over the course of the program, 38 Americorps VISTA volunteers at 25 project sites resulted in 50,481 computer training and access user sessions. CVDN was funded by the James Irvine Foundation, the Community Technology Foundation of California, N-Power and SBC. In desigining the strategic program, GVC staff offerered three customized programs for community-based agencies to host CVDN staff members: Non-Profit Technology Capacity Building by providing technical assistance to help non-profits use technology to improve service delivery. Community Technology Center Development by supporting grass roots organizations to mobilize and create public outlets for accessing technology. Workforce Development with basic technology literacy training and community outreach at community service agencies CVDN Work Plan Cover sheet CVDN / CNCS AmeriCorps*VISTA Work Plan CVDN Program Brochure Where CVDN was active Teams of VISTA volunteers were individually placed at key public technology providers (called "project site") in the community like youth centers, libraries and job training centers to help improve their technology services and coordinate with similar programs. Each VISTA is assigned to assess technology opportunities, train volunteers to teach others in basic computer and Internet skills, conduct public outreach to use the technology, and organize related projects that are unique to the host organization. During the project year, the outreach and sessions are conducted in both English and Spanish.
