Croquet provides a 3D game-like presentation to provide context and real time social interaction, but does so with a new computing model that allows safe, scalable integration between applications, multimedia, and communication. And it’s free for private or commercial use, and is open-source.Convened by computing pioneers Alan Kay and David Reed, the Croquet project is creating software that allows any combination of people in the world to simultaneously and spontaneously work within the same applications at the same time. Moreover, users can seamlessly communicate from within the application, even as they collaboratively create and modify these systems while they are using them. It sounds like science-fiction, but the first versions of the basic technology exist today.There are several institutions and individuals worldwide who are working on various parts of the core technology and applications. Working within the original Croquet Committee and the emerging Croquet Consortium, the non-profit Collaborative for Croquet is dedicated to realizing the potential benefits of the technology today. By providing free open software and a free open place to connect to, we’re making the future happen.Today, our immediate goal is to make it easy for thought leaders to try a real sample application, showing how much better software and telecommunications can be, and allowing them to participate in this development.
