Apple and product placements

Yesterday on CBS there were three new season premieres - How I Met Your Mother, Worst Week and Two And a Half Men. Invariably in all the three, you could see the Apple iPhone being brandished about by the actors. I wonder how much it cost Apple for the deal. There ain’t no easier way to getting inside a consumer’s mind, eh?

Google Chrome

With both Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer supporting extensions, it’s a surprise that Google would launch Chrome without such support. But then again, it’s a company that literally serves millions of ads, so I am pretty sure they wouldn’t want extensions such as AdBlock Plus.It would be interesting to see if/when they add such support. Personally, I think it will be a long time before they do it, but that’s just me.

Testers at Google

Google is a multi-billion dollar company. I wish they’d spend more money on hiring software test engineers. Why should we put up with crappy interfaces and still help the company make billions more through ads? This may look like the beginning of a rant, but that’s all I have to say for now. You know what I’m talking about, so if you’re unhappy with a particular Google “service”, leave a comment.

One of the things that I passionately hate about Facebook is the “People You May Know” tool. I don’t know why, but I just friggin’ hate it! Well, it could be because more than half the time it shows people I don’t really know.

The Accord is totalled
August 1, 2008 at 3:04 pm
The Honda Accord I used to drive is now totalled. I met with an accident 10 days ago where my car was sandwiched between a Yaris and a pickup truck and it was pretty badly damaged (thankfully nothing happened to me); the radiator is gone, and so are the front headlights, bonnet (hood, if you’re American) and trunk, which got smashed in.A preliminary report from the body shop said it is not worth repairing as the total cost of repairs exceeds 75% of the value of the car. The car itself was in very good condition with new drive tyres (tires) and regularly maintained, but it had done nearly 144,000 miles. I am yet to hear from the insurance company about the damage estimate. If they could repair it, I’d be more than happy to pay my part of the deductible and have the car back - since I cannot afford (nor do I have the time) to buy another car right now.Right now I am driving a rental Kia Spectra arranged by the insurance company. But I will have only a week left after they pay out to return the rental. I’ve been running around talking to dealers for the Honda Civic Hybrid, but so far everyone’s saying there’s a three-month wait (at least). One dealer was trying to sell it to me at a premium and that was for a 2008 model (if I wait a couple of months, the ‘09 will come out).Living 30 miles from office has its disadvantages. I might move closer to office in a few months, you never know. And give up on the car altogether.

Marathon time again

Well, it’s that time of the year again where I decide to run the marathon. After two half-marathons, I will be running the full 26-mile marathon this year, in Montreal. I was in Montreal last year for the Formula 1 Grand Prix and loved the city, so I look forward to going back. The marathon is on September 14, 2008, and I started practicing from today with a 5 km run.In the coming weeks, I will try to record my progress on this blog and elsewhere. If you are interested in running, check out my tips for running a half marathon.

Power is Apple. Or is it Steve Jobs?

Just found this interesting article over at TechCrunch. So it appears that the new 3G iPhone cannot be activated by you using iTunes, as with the older model. Activation is now in-store only. Wow, I mean, that’s crazy. That’s tying you to AT&T and they are getting away with it. But the only reason they are getting away with it is because it’s the goddamn Apple iPhone 3G.A few weeks ago, the lower portion of my old iPhone lost sensitivity. Overuse? I doubt it. Anyway, off I went to the Genius Bar at the local Apple store. The Genius tried convincing me to buy a sleeve for the iPhone, and sort of hinted that I may not get a replacement as the phone had a few scratches and dents. I said I’ll think about it. Anyway, I got a replacement iPhone (and would you believe a girl next to me had the same problem, and she also got a replacement).I don’t know if this is a common theme among the first generation iPhones. Anyway, I am glad I hadn’t jail-broken my phone yet, otherwise I wouldn’t have received the replacement. The warranty on this phone lasts till August 2008, maybe after that I’ll give it a try.

One of the quietest months

After a whirlwind tour of California at the end of May and beginning of June, I drowned in work, work and more work. And then I lost the password for this blog. Well, it’s back.Half my time in California was spent at the Qualcomm BREW 2008 conference - although I was managing my company’s booth rather than attend the sessions. It was fun, mostly. Something I have never done before. The rest of the time was spent in a Chrysler PT Cruiser and/or meeting relatives.

It appears that my blog was hacked for a brief period. Maybe a few days. I didn’t notice it until I saw why my Google AdSense page hits were so low. The other reason, of course, is because I am not posting as much, which is a shame. Anyway, the good guys at weblogs.us (thanks John!) fixed the issue and the site is back up.May has been hectic as hell. More in a later post.

My next portable computer: The Lenovo ThinkPad X61 Tablet

Man, the Lenovo X61T one beauty of a laptop. This is what I’m saving up for.My Acer TravelMate C110 can’t take it anymore. I mean, when the keys start falling off, you know it’s time to change your laptop. There’s no way in hell I am buying a regular laptop. With a 12.1″ screen, the ThinkPad X61 Tablet will be no different from the C110. At $1,570, it’s a bit more than I can afford right now, but soon…
