Dispatches from the digital-transition front 6a00d8345163e169e20105351ac6f8970c-800wi Two dispatches from the digital-transition front lines: 1) Minnesota ACORN is teaming with Best Buy to assist local residents with the move from analog to digital television. The effort is targeting what ACORN describes as its "core constituencies: low-income and communities of color, senior citizens, and disadvantaged families and individuals." The group says in a press release that it is launching a three-month community-outreach campaign, beginning with a door-knocking event in St. Paul's Frogtown neighborhood Saturday.ACORN hopes to reach about 20,000 households potentially affected by the transition between now and the federally mandated Feb. 17 deadline for most TV stations to go digital. Do you know of a local family needing such assistance? Call 651-642-9639 (extension 115). 2) Comcast is trying to lure those now using older analog TVs with an offer of free basic cable for a year -- provided the new customer signs up for at least one other Comcast service.Without such an additional service, the free basic cable for a year costs $10 a month. Comcast defines "basic cable" as a tier of 20 to 30 channels (including the major networks), with no need for any new gear, provided the customer's TV is cable-ready. Comcast has DTV-transition guidance here and here. I'm a Comcast customer with no complaints, so I won't try to talk you out of the above -- except to note that an alternative is far cheaper in the long run. With a one-time purchase of a digital converter for your older TV, you'll get plenty of over-the-air watching options with zero monthly fees. (With Comcast, steeper monthly fees eventually kick in.) What's more with a pair of free $40 federal coupons (one such pictured above), you can get a pair of converters for little or nothing. This is the best DTV deal in town. (Sorry, Comcast.) See the Pioneer Press' digital-transition supersite here. Posted at 03:14 PM | Permalink | Comments (0)

I've finally done the deed: I own a new Mac imac Those who follow my Tech Test Drive column know I have been threatening for years — literally — to replace my aging Apple iMac G4 with an up-to-date machine. (On my tight budget, a computer purchase is a major event.) So this is the appropriate venue to announce I’ve finally done the deed: I recently purchased another  Imacg4 iMac. This one is a dramatic upgrade from the old one, with a 24-inch screen instead of a 15-inch display, and a shocking amount of added horsepower compared to the old iMac (if slower than today's top-of-the-line computers). I adore my old machine, with its still-irresistible design consisting of a floating screen on a metal arm embedded in a half-sphere base. This is an industrial-design masterstroke, and more ingenious than the current screen-on-a-metal-pedestal design. But my poor old Mac could no longer keep up; It can’t run the latest “Leopard” variation of the Mac OS X operating system, and even the older “Tiger” seemed to lag lately. I was also eager to run Windows Vista at home, which for a Mac user is possible only with newer machines running Intel processors. Bottom line: I am happy with my purchase. Getting to this point wasn’t entirely stress-free, though. Here is my latest roadmap to new-Mac ownership: Mac or PC? Yes, despite a lifetime of Mac use, I did briefly and seriously ponder whether to invest in a Windows PC. Feast your eyes on their latest phone, which has an iPhone-like touch screen with a few variations. The Storm, to be distributed exclusively by Verizon in the United States this fall, has a so-called "clickable" display that is said to respond much like a physical keyboard does. Per a press release: The BlackBerry Storm smartphone comes with an innovative touch-screen that actually depresses ever so slightly when the screen is pressed. The user distinctly feels the screen being pressed and released with a gentle 'click', similar to the feeling of a key on a physical keyboard or a button on a mouse. The ‘clickable’ touch-screen gives the user positive confirmation that they have made a selection and the result is a dramatically enhanced touch interface and a highly intuitive typing experience.  In addition to the familiar navigation keys (‘phone’, ‘menu’ and ‘escape’) that are common to other BlackBerry smartphones, the new BlackBerry Storm adds support for multi-touches, taps, slides, and other touch-screen gestures, so customers can easily highlight, scroll, pan, and zoom for smooth navigation. The BlackBerry Storm smartphone also features a built-in accelerometer, allowing its touch-screen to automatically switch between landscape mode and portrait mode as the user rotates the handset. RIM’s SureType keyboard layout is available in portrait and a full QWERTY keyboard layout is available in landscape mode. Other relevant features, such as cut and paste, are only a touch away for the ultimate smartphone experience. I'm looking forward to testing this puppy. More Web-scouring tips for political junkies untitled I'm normally not a politics junkie, but the presidential election has turned me into one. I've spent the past weeks scouring the Web in a variety of ways for the latest political news and buzz. Today, on page one of the Pioneer Press, I have a story that summarizes my info-scouring methods. Here are a couple of additional tips. First, from my colleague Rachel Stassen Berger (known for her Political Animal blog and Twitter feed), there's this: Check the candidates: All federal and many state legislative candidates these days have Web sites that allow supporters -- and the curious -- to sign up for email alerts. Some, including Obama and Republican Sen. Norm Coleman, allow folks to sign up for text news alerts. The candidates and many of the interest groups are also using YouTube to the hilt. If you create a YouTube account you can subscribe to your candidates "channel" so all their new videos will await you when you check your subscriptions. That's an easy way to track candidates ads and the video they've collected of their opponents in less than optimal moments. Also, note that Hulu will live-stream tonight's political debate. Aftewards, fact-check the candidates' claims at the fine FactCheck.org site. Posted at 04:46 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) Peek: Great e-mail gizmo, but not for geeks Peek_Red The Peek is a great BlackBerry-like device for the masses, as I note in a recent Tech Test Drive column (download PDF). But while I like the Peek, I'm having increasing difficulty seeing it in a geek's hands given the obstacles I'm running into. I can't get my two main accounts installed on the thing, for one thing, even with technical help from the Peek makers. They assured me one of my accounts, a domain-customized Gmail variant, would be operational as of this morning, but I'm having no luck downloading messages via the device's T-Mobile wireless-data service. The other account, consisting of IMAP access to my employer's Microsoft Exchange-based e-mail system, is stumping the Peek techies so far. They told me today after more than a week of troubleshooting that they're busy with regular customers and putting my issue on the back burner. So, while a busy Mom will have a ball using a Peek with her generic AOL, Comcast or Gmail account, I am at a standstill. Not fun. But, again, I do like the Peek. For my mother. Not for me. It's not for geeks. Posted at 04:25 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) Next »
