However, many may never have even heard of RISC OS - so if you're one of them, you've come to the right place.Pre-dating both Windows and Mac OS to use a task bar or 'Dock', RISC OS includes many revolutionary features which are only just being copied by other systems. Its anti-aliased font technology is still the envy of the computer world and its drag 'n' drop, stackable windows GUI, flexibility and ease of use make it arguably the most productive computer system in the world today.Thousands of applications and utilities are available, often developed by small companies and individual users, mean that you should be able to find software on RISC OS to cater for all your computing requirements. It is hoped that new developers will come on board to help promote and enhance RISC OS even more.RISCOS.org seeks to not only introduce newcomers and experts alike to this wonderful system, but to act as a resource centre and help forum for existing users around the world. Our software database is probably the most comprehensive repository of RISC OS links anywhere on the internet, and we update it frequently with new releases.News Headlines from the RISC OS world [28th Sep 2008] Rare A500 surfaces on eBay - A very rare Acorn A500 computer featuring a prototype ARM3 daughterboard is currently lurking on eBay.More Info: eBay [27th Sep 2008] End of the line for Iyonix - From 30th September it will no longer be possible to purchase an Iyonix computer. After 15 years of business, Jack Lillingston and John Ballance would like to thank all their customers for their support. There are still limited supplies of Iyonix computers available, so order one now as remaining stock is available on a first come, first served basis. From 1st October, support for the Iyonix will continue through the Iyonix dealer network, website and email.More Info: Full press release[8th Jun 2008] Benefits of RISC OS touted in US Patent - I'm not sure if this is news or not (it was to me, not recollecting having seen it mentioned previously) but whilst researching 3D optical imaging on the internet, I stumpled across US Patent 7105795 - "Imaging system, methodology, and applications employing reciprocal space optical design" - which favourably mentions RISC OS, running on an ARM based hardware design. They recommend using RISC OS, "which is a ROM-based OS that has both high- and low-level abstractions, is very robust, and has been deployed since 1987. It also has a very simple and intuitive graphical user interface. Code density, due to the RISC techniques employed, is very good, and major applications generally only use 100's of kilobytes. typically, complete computing systems can be obtained that make use of RISCOS and the ARM processors in the form of single-board computers. Power requirements very rarely exceed 5 10 Watts."The patent was granted back in Sept 2006 so it may be news to some people, but I thought I'd mention it. :-)More Info: PatentstormSELECT4i4 featuring RISC OS 6.10 to be released at Wakefield Show 2008 RISCOS Ltd have today announced that a major new version of RISC OS will be available at the Wakefield Show this weekend. Gizmodo Latest GadgetsiPhone Smashes 10 Million Sales Target Early? It looks like the iPhone could be a whole more popular than we already think it is, with eagle-eyed trackers suggesting that the trendy phone has topped the 10 million mark for 2008 a full 3 months earlier than predicted. Writers for Bullish Cross based their claim on an analysis of IMEI numbers -the unique 15-digit code assigned to each individual iPhone found on the back of the box. The IMEI number not only identifies individual phones but also the batch they came from and can indicate just how fast units are shipping. The data collected from Mac Observer's Apple Finance Board and other sources indicate that the Apple iPhone in Q4 [calendar Q3] managed to shift over 7 million units, not the predicted 4 million units. This means Apple has topped its stated goal of selling 10 million in 2008 very early indeed. The writer's say: Manhunt 2 Hits The UK For Halloween Time to sharpen your axes because controversial gorefest Manhunt 2 is coming to the UK this Halloween.Rockstar has finally given a release date of October 31 for the grisly game, a full 7 months after the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC) was forced to give it an '18' rating. It was originally banned in June last year.So why did it take 7 months after the clearance for a launch here? No one's saying but there's no chance Rockstar is going to miss the Christmas run-up. Ergonomic HandshoeMouse Kind To Hands, Hates Wallets I'm pretty sure my bog-standard USB mouse was not designed by scientists looking out for my welfare but the Hippus HandshoeMouse was.Scientists at the medical universities of Rotterdam and Maastricht went to the trouble of measuring the muscular tension in the hands and arms of mouse users, and then analysed control behaviour over a period of 4 years. Impressive indeed. The upshot was that test subjects still build up 'unnecessarily strong muscular tension', even when they are not moving the mouse. According to project Leader Prof. Dr. Snijders:"It immediately became clear to us that this is an important part of RSI problems. For the tension in the fingers also directly affects the muscle groups in the neck and shoulders.' The solution was the HandshoeMouse which allows the whole hand and fingers to rest on the mouse, with the keys and scroll wheel positioned so that only the smallest of movements are needed to control your PC or game. PS3 Sales Beating Forecasts The cheaper Xbox 360 might be doing the impossible right now in Japan by overtaking the PS3 in sales but, the PS3 is well ahead of its targets, according to Sony.Even the recession doesn't seem to be slowing things down according to Jack Tretton, Chief Executive of Sony Computer Entertainment of America. He commented: "We are in good shape for that number worldwide. We are tracking at 100 percent up over last year ... about 30 percent ahead of where we should be. So sales could slow down and we will still hit our number."Most Brits Fear Identity Theft Ever since people starting nicking passwords, credit card details and other information from other people's hard drives, the subject of identity theft has been a rather sensitive one in modern society.A recent survey conducted to kick off awareness of NIFPW, or National Identity Fraud Prevention Week, shows that a massive 97% of British consumers are concerned that companies don't take good enough care of their personal data.Stuff.tv Latest GadgetsStuff.tv's best music streaming devicesGot lots of music and want to play it all around your house?
