About Code of Online Business Practices
This Code is the newest self-regulation tool developed by the Better Business Bureau system to provide Internet businesses with a well-respected means to foster consumer trust and confidence on the Web. It provides online businesses with guidelines to help address important consumer protection issues raised by e-commerce.
We committed to an open and inclusive process for soliciting input on the Code. We posted the first draft of the Code online and solicited suggestions and comments through email and in person at regional meetings that were held throughout the country this past December. Based on this input, we posted a second draft and again solicited additional input.
The Better Business Bureau system has, over the years, fashioned and promoted helpful voluntary codes that service a variety of industries and organizations. BBBOnLine has developed two web site seal programs, the BBBOnLine Privacy Seal Program and the BBBOnLine Reliability Seal Program. The Reliability Seal is the most widely adopted seal of its kind on the Web to date.
BBBOnLine has engaged the law firm of Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn, PLLC, a prominent advertising and Internet law firm, to assist with this project.
